Keeping Rabbits is committed to ensuring digital accessibility for people with disabilities. We continually improve the user experience for everyone and apply the relevant accessibility standards.

Conformance Status

We aim to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities and more user-friendly for everyone.

The guidelines have three levels of conformance:

  • Level A — The minimum level of accessibility
  • Level AA — The target level of conformance for Keeping Rabbits
  • Level AAA — The highest level of accessibility

Measures Taken

We have taken the following measures to ensure accessibility:

  • Semantic HTML — All pages use proper HTML5 semantic elements (<nav>, <main>, <article>, <header>, <footer>) to support assistive technologies.
  • Skip links — A "Skip to main content" link is provided at the top of every page to bypass navigation.
  • Keyboard navigation — All interactive elements are keyboard-accessible, including dropdown menus, modals, and form controls.
  • Focus indicators — Visible focus indicators are provided for all keyboard-interactive elements.
  • Alt text — Images include descriptive alt text. Decorative images use empty alt attributes.
  • Color contrast — We work to maintain sufficient color contrast ratios (minimum 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text) throughout the site.
  • Responsive design — Content is designed to be usable at screen widths from 320px to 1920px+.
  • Motion sensitivity — Animations and transitions are disabled for users who have enabled prefers-reduced-motion in their operating system.
  • Readable fonts — Text sizes use relative units (rem/em) so they can be scaled by the user's browser settings.
  • Form labels — All form fields have associated labels or aria-label attributes.
  • Breadcrumbs — Navigation breadcrumbs are provided with proper schema markup for screen readers and search engines.

Known Limitations

While we strive for full accessibility, some limitations exist:

  • Third-party advertising scripts — Some advertising scripts (Google AdSense) are served by third parties. These scripts may not be fully under our control and could present accessibility challenges that we are working to address.
  • User-generated content — Comments and other user-generated content sections may contain unmoderated links or images without descriptive text.
  • Legacy content — Some older articles pre-dating this accessibility commitment may not yet have been fully audited. We are working through the archive.
  • PDF downloads — Some printable resources are provided as PDFs. We are gradually migrating these to accessible HTML formats.

Assessment Approach

Accessibility is assessed through:

  • Automated testing with axe DevTools and Lighthouse
  • Manual keyboard navigation testing
  • Screen reader testing (VoiceOver, NVDA)
  • Color contrast analysis
  • Zoom testing at 200% and 400%

Technical Information

Keeping Rabbits is built with Astro, a static site generator. Accessibility is implemented through:

  • Semantic HTML5 structure
  • CSS custom properties for consistent theming
  • ARIA attributes where HTML semantics are insufficient
  • Client-side JavaScript for progressive enhancement
